Lehi Public Tree Inventory Coming This June
Lehi’s urban forest is getting a health checkup.
Throughout June, Lehi City will be conducting a public tree inventory to better understand the species, size, condition, and health of public trees throughout our community. The project will help the City plan for long-term tree care, maintenance, and future planting efforts.
The inventory will examine approximately 35,000 public trees located throughout Lehi.
Why Is Lehi Conducting a Tree Inventory?
Trees provide important benefits to our community. They create shade, improve air quality, help manage stormwater, support mental wellness, and contribute to healthier, more beautiful neighborhoods.
By completing a citywide tree inventory, Lehi City will gain valuable information about the condition and makeup of our public tree canopy. The data collected will help guide decisions related to:
-
Tree maintenance and pruning
-
Long-term tree health management
-
Future planting and replacement efforts
-
Identifying areas that may benefit from additional tree coverage
-
Supporting a healthy and resilient urban forest
“The data we’ll be able to obtain will be instrumental in how we move forward with tree care for our communities, as well as show how our city is benefited by our trees or what areas could use more trees,” said Jessica Smith, Urban Forester for Lehi City.
What Areas Are Included?
The inventory will focus only on public trees located in:
-
Park strips (city rights-of-way)
-
Public parks
-
The Lehi Cemetery
-
City facilities and buildings
Trees located on private property are not included in this survey.
Using specialized scanning and mapping equipment, survey teams will collect information such as tree species, height, canopy size, trunk diameter, and overall condition.
What Residents Can Expect
Residents may notice survey vehicles and crews working in neighborhoods during June, primarily on weekdays.
To help teams safely and accurately collect measurements, residents are encouraged to avoid parking on the side of the street when surveyors are scheduled to be in their neighborhood. Clear curb access helps crews gather the information needed for park strip trees and roadway areas.
Lehi City understands residents will want advance notice. Additional information, including neighborhood schedules and estimated scanning dates for specific areas, will be released as routes are finalized.
Residents will not be asked to keep vehicles off the street for the entire month. Instead, the City will provide neighborhood-specific scheduling information to help residents plan ahead when their area is scheduled for scanning.
Planning to Plant a Street Tree?
If you are planning to plant or replace a tree in the park strip adjacent to your home, remember that a free Lehi City Street Tree Permit is available online and must be obtained before planting.
Thank you for helping Lehi care for one of our community’s most valuable natural resources. Additional project updates, neighborhood schedules, and frequently asked questions will be shared throughout the project.
