2010 Grand Marshall
Hesther Rippy was chosen this year to be Lehi Round-Up Celebrations Grand Marshal. She is a great example to all who have been given a problem and then found a solution that goes far beyond the call of duty. In 1997, Hesther and her husband Bill were asked by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to be the literacy specialist’s representing the Lehi North Stake. They both agreed and asked, “Where do we go for training?” There wasn’t any training…they just asked them to find a way to help people read better. And that is what she did.

Hesther and Bill Rippy (deceased 2002) moved to Lehi 25 years ago from Dallas, Texas to be closer to their daughter Rebecca Merrill who was living in Utah. They have one daughter, seven grandchildren, and twenty-four great grandchildren. Along with her great family heritage Hesther has touched many hearts of the Lehi City children and young adults that have walked through the doors of the Literacy Center.

Hesther, spends four days a week overseeing the operation of the Rippy Literacy Center, which provides reading, math, language, and computer skills instructions free of charge to children and adults.

After receiving their Stake calling, Hesther attended Family Literacy turoring classes and sought advice from the Family Literacy staff. She knew that their needed to be a better program in place. She approached Mayor Ken Greenwood of Lehi and was given a small area in a public building to begin the literacy center. She has also, worked with elementary schools and junior highs to implement “pull out” programs to help students fine-tune their skills and receive more one on one tutoring.

Through the years Hesther has helped many people with literacy problems, and because of her service she has earned various awards: Huntsman Excellence in Education Award, Utah National Guard Minuteman Award, L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth, Utah Treasures, Community Award presented by Utah Lieutenant Governor Olene Walker, Selection of the Center by the NBA and Toyota for a $65,000 grant for renovation, Gold Presidential Award, and many more. Hesther has been recognized for her efforts towards literacy but her caring heart and dedication is what seems to keep the literacy center moving forward every day.
